Raising Chickens: The Importance of a Good Chicken Coop Design
Chickens can be contained in a number of different ways. A quick search for chicken coop plans reveals hundreds, and even thousands, of options. Some plans result in small structures that are fairly simplistic and look almost like doghouses. Others are quite complex, featuring multiple levels. If you are thinking about building a chicken coop, don’t just jump right in and possibly spend more money than you have budgeted for the project. Instead, do your research and build a coop without hassle or stress. Before you know it, you will have something impressive and functional to show for your efforts!
Chickens do not need a lot to be happy. There are a couple of basic things that are important, however. They need a warm space to find shelter from the outdoor elements. They also need ample room to lay eggs. Chickens, and their eggs, are often targeted by predators, which means that their chicken coop needs to be well-made and able to provide adequate protection. In addition to their shelter, chickens must also have something to eat and drink. That’s basically it; if you give them those things, they will flourish under your care.
You can build a basic chicken coop or you can get creative and come up with a design of your own. First, look over the available space and figure out how much you are going to use for the coop. You want to ensure that there is a good distance between your house and the chicken coop. Chickens are not the quietest creatures, which means that you need a little sound buffer. In addition, the coop may not always smell the best. However, it is important not to be overzealous and place the coop very far from your house. You need to be on the lookout for predators, and you do not want to have to walk long distances to get to the coop each day.
You must also think about how you are going to clean the coop. This helps reduce the stench and keeps bugs away. In addition, you want to keep the area clean for the health of the chickens. This sounds easy, but unfortunately, sometimes the chicken coops are built in a way that does not allow for proper cleaning.
For instance, the floor should not be all at one level. While you clearly want your floor in your house to be level, it is just not functional for a coop because the floors get very dirty. If you have a sloped floor, clean-up becomes a breeze.
Your chicken coop design is an essential factor in how well you are able to raise your chickens. Also, remember that a chicken wire fence should surround the coop in order to help protect your birds. Some predators can dig, so make sure you insert the fence into the ground a little. If you do a good job with your chicken coop, you will find raising chickens to be an enjoyable process.
